Consulting Services
In addition to working part-time as a Reference Librarian at Columbia University and teaching, I also work as an Information Consultant. I provide consulting services in the following areas.
Web Strategy
Today's websites and applications are simple and efficient, social, and provide the user with several avenues to information. They are incorporating Web 2.0 features, principles of information design, and advances in user interfaces. Are you working on designing a 2.0 Web presence? I would be happy to speak with you at any stage of your (re)design. You can read my thoughts on the topic here.
Social Media Marketing/Community Building
Marketing is no longer about targeting demographics, it is about developing relationships and building community. Social networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook, social news sites such as Digg, media sharing sites such as YouTube, bookmarking websites such as del.icio.us, and other social Web applications provide a wealth of opportunities for developing brand awareness. The power of marketing within social networks such as these has been quantified in a study conducted by Marketing Evolution which coined the term “momentum effect” – a new metric used to measure the effectiveness of marketing within social networks. By developing cross-marketing strategies, creating viral campaigns, and utilizing these social websites, companies and individuals have the potential to increase both visibility and website traffic.
Information Architecture (Wireframes, Card Sorting, Website Flowcharts)
Having an intuitive, well-designed website is imperative in today’s market. Embracing the established principles of the information architecture field is one way to accomplish this. Wireframes serve as a visual model for the interface design of a website, CMS, or other system and can be used throughout the life cycle of a project to build in changes, features, and functionality. They can include technical specifications for developers, and requirements for designers. Card sorting is a technique used to determine a classification scheme, or taxonomy that speaks to your user population. A website flowchart, or sitemap lays out all parent and child pages within a website, or section of a website. These can be of great assistance during a redesign, or reorganization of a website.
Documentation (FAQs, Help Documents, Manuals, etc.)
Today’s DIY (do-it-yourself) user will oftentimes not stick around if they cannot figure out how to accomplish tasks on your website. While the first priority of most websites is ease of use, there are always more complicated functions and features that could use explaining, i.e. forgotten passwords, deleting content, etc. The FAQ document is the go-to place for these answers, and users expect to find them there. Having a spot-on FAQ document or Help section on your website will save you from losing visitors and/or wasting uncounted hours of staff time responding to the same email questions. You can check out some of my work here.
Webcasting/Screencasting
Screencasts are videos which record the actions that take place on the computer screen, along with a narrative audio track in order to demonstrate how to accomplish computer-related tasks. They are terrific for creating short how-to videos, providing Help or Tutorial instructions for new users to a website, and/or for demonstrating multiple websites. You can check out some examples of my work here.
Staff Training
I provide a wide variety of training workshops and sessions and would gladly tailor any of my courses for your organization’s needs. I provide on-site training for staff members with all levels of computer experience ranging from the novice to the power-user. My courses are designed for participation with hands-on exercises that have learners using the technology before the session’s end. Continued access to the workshop website and materials encourages ongoing practice.
